WMCHealth Takes Steps Towards New Patient-Centered “Medical Villages”

Posted By: Advancing Care

Enhanced care, thriving communities and innovative healthcare converge with WMCHealth’s two upcoming projects.

By Lisa Cesarano

Slated for completion in 2020, two Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth) hospitals in Kingston and Port Jervis are making steady progress toward achieving a new vision of state-of-the-art healthcare services and resources in the communities they serve.

Bon Secours Community Hospital

Bon Secours Charity Health System, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network, recently welcomed local leaders and New York State officials to Bon Secours Community Hospital for a special ceremony, formally heralding the beginning of construction on a transformative $40-million hospital-renovation project.

With approval and $24 million in funding from the state, the Investing in a Healthier Community project is expected to usher in a new era of healthcare in the city of Port Jervis and its surrounding community. Facility and diagnostic equipment upgrades, and the development of the centerpiece of a “medical village,” will offer multidisciplinary health services for local residents. Through the medical village, the hospital will collaborate with community partners to provide a range of health-and-wellness services from one centralized hub.

The project will develop in four phases:

Phase I will include renovation and expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department, which will be completed with minimal patient-care disruption. Additionally, the unit housing the hospital’s nationally accredited bariatric program also will be refurbished to provide an enhanced level of care.

Phase II is scheduled to begin in fall 2018 and will include additional Emergency Department enhancements, as well as the development of a new laboratory that will expedite care.

Phase III completion will result in a reimagined imaging suite.

Phase IV will focus on the heart of the medical village, the creation of a wellness area, on-site pharmacy and additional Emergency Department growth and refinements.

At its completion, the effort will bring to Port Jervis an expanded, state-of-the-art Emergency Department with 10,000 square feet of space; a new, welcoming entrance and expanded lounge for patients and family members; an upgraded imaging center replete with world-leading diagnostic technologies; and a redesigned bariatric center. Additionally, 36 semi-private rooms will be converted to private rooms for increased patient comfort and privacy.

HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus

Also buoyed by state support, HealthAlliance Hospital: Mary’s Avenue Campus, a member of WMCHealth, will undergo a $92 million expansion.

This renovation represents the first stage of a multiyear, $133.6 million Healthy Neighborhood Initiative project in Kingston, with New York State providing two-thirds of the funding.

The second phase of the initiative also will redevelop HealthAlliance Hospital: Broadway Campus, another member of WMCHealth, into its own “medical village,” a hub and focal point for the city’s health needs.
